Kraken withdrawals: limits, holds and transfer completion
Kraken withdrawals move cash to a bank account or crypto to an external destination, subject to available balances and limits. Check the withdrawal allowance for the chosen currency before sending. A funding hold can restrict an amount that remains visible and tradable. Each method also has its own minimum, fee and destination requirements. Submission starts processing; arrival depends on the banking method or receiving network, plus any checks at the destination.

Rolling limits for cash and crypto withdrawals
24-hour and 30-day windows govern withdrawal limits, with separate allowances for cash and cryptocurrency. These windows move continuously, so midnight does not automatically restore the daily allowance. If a withdrawal exceeds your remaining allowance, reduce the amount or wait for earlier withdrawals to leave the relevant window. Verification status, residence, account history and the asset affect the limits that apply. Cash funding limits use a USD calculation basis, even when the transfer uses another currency. Crypto withdrawal allowances can change with account activity, and the Limits tab in Account Settings shows the account-specific figures.
| Parameter | Applies to | Duration or window |
|---|---|---|
| Daily withdrawal window | Cash and crypto withdrawal allowances | Rolling 24 hours |
| Monthly withdrawal window | Cash and crypto withdrawal allowances | Rolling 30 days |
| ACH funding hold | Deposits and purchases through Plaid; an equivalent amount is restricted | 7 days |
| Instant purchase hold | Certain card, digital wallet or PayPal purchases | 72 hours when a hold applies |
| Recurring direct debit hold | Purchases through Adyen SEPA Direct Debit; an equivalent amount is restricted | 7 days |
| Address approval link | New crypto destinations when email confirmation is required | Expires after 1 hour |
Expiry of a funding hold removes that restriction; the account’s withdrawal allowance and destination requirements continue to apply.
Choose a bank transfer or a crypto withdrawal
Cash transfers deliver an existing cash balance through a supported banking method. Crypto withdrawals send a selected asset through a network that the destination accepts. Region, currency and recipient compatibility constrain both choices. Banking methods differ in eligibility and processing schedules; crypto networks differ in withdrawal requirements and confirmation handling. Neither route has a universal speed advantage. A lower fee on an incompatible network does not make it a usable destination. The available choices also depend on the services permitted for the account.
Why is the full balance unavailable for withdrawal?
Funding holds, open orders and collateral requirements can reduce the amount available for withdrawal.
Funds held after a deposit or purchase
Certain card, digital wallet and PayPal purchases may create a 72-hour withdrawal hold, depending on account history and transaction activity. It restricts an amount equivalent to the purchase. Additional cash purchases generally remain locked for the active hold’s remaining duration. For USD deposits through Apple Pay or Google Pay, adding a new card can trigger a new 72-hour hold. Each PayPal deposit may also have its own 72-hour hold. Trading remains available during these holds, although exchanging the affected funds does not release the equivalent withdrawal restriction.
ACH deposits and purchases through Plaid carry a seven-day withdrawal hold on the funded amount. The restriction can affect cash or crypto withdrawals of equivalent value. Recurring purchases through Adyen SEPA Direct Debit also have a seven-day hold. These durations concern withdrawability; they do not describe how quickly funds enter the account.
Balances committed to account activity
Open or pending orders reserve funds that cannot be withdrawn while committed. Spot margin positions require collateral that remains unavailable while those positions stay open. Cancelling an open order releases its reservation; closing a spot margin position removes its ongoing collateral requirement. Unstake manually staked balances or deallocate Flexible Opt-In Rewards before withdrawing them. For bonded products, wait for any applicable unbonding period after requesting unstaking or deallocation. Fixed Rate Opt-In Rewards remain locked until maturity; disable auto-renew to avoid another term. Auto Earn normally permits withdrawals without manual deallocation, although insufficient liquidity can delay Auto Earn staking withdrawals until the protocol’s unbonding period ends. A negative balance in any currency also prevents withdrawals from the account, even when another balance appears positive.
The withdrawal flow can show a breakdown of the available balance, funding limits and holds. That breakdown identifies restrictions affecting the amount available to send.
Match the amount to the receiving destination
Each withdrawal has minimum and fee requirements for its selected currency and method. A sufficient total account value does not establish that a particular currency balance can cover the request. Read the review screen’s amount and fee fields together. The currency beside each field determines which balance and cost the request concerns.
Bank account eligibility
A cash withdrawal requires a bank account under your control, with a name matching the verified Kraken account or entity. The bank must satisfy the chosen funding provider’s requirements. A supported currency alone does not establish that every bank can receive it. Incorrect account details can cause delays or rejection. Use the details for the receiving account, keeping the withdrawal method and currency consistent.
Crypto destination requirements
Asset and network compatibility
The selected network must match the network that the recipient supports for that asset. Different cryptocurrencies can share similar address formats, so passing a format check does not establish compatibility with the intended asset and network. Copy the destination address from the receiving wallet or service and compare it before confirmation. Include any destination tag or memo that the receiving service requires. A transfer over an incompatible network can cause permanent loss. Address approval enables a saved destination; it does not certify the receiving service’s crediting rules. Bitcoin withdrawals over the Lightning Network require a compatible Lightning wallet and a payment request that specifies an amount.
Minimum amount and transfer fee
Crypto withdrawal minimums and fees vary with the asset and network. The fee shown at confirmation applies to the proposed withdrawal; a remembered fee from an earlier transfer may differ. Read the fee’s currency as well as its amount. The withdrawal minimum includes the fee. A request below the displayed minimum cannot proceed, even with an otherwise available balance. Selecting another network is useful only when the receiving destination supports it. A trading fee schedule does not establish the withdrawal fee.
When has a withdrawal reached its destination?
A withdrawal reaches its destination when the receiving bank or service credits it under that route’s requirements, or the funds arrive in your wallet. For cash withdrawals, Kraken’s Success status means that the withdrawal has been sent to its funding provider. It does not establish that the receiving bank has credited the account. Banking cutoffs and holidays can affect transfer schedules. The estimate for the chosen banking method describes expected processing, while the receiving bank’s account record establishes receipt.
For blockchain withdrawals in Kraken Classic, Initiated means internal checks are underway; Pending means the transaction has reached the payment gateway for processing. Sending means Kraken has broadcast it and is awaiting a confirmation, while Success means one network confirmation. The receiving exchange can require further confirmations before crediting the deposit, so that status does not settle its crediting timetable.
A cash transfer that exceeds its method’s estimate needs a review of the status, bank details and banking holidays. Contact Kraken Support for unresolved cash withdrawal delays. For crypto sent to another exchange, the receiving exchange handles queries about missing credits.
Resolve the restriction before requesting another transfer
In Kraken Classic, the Error field in a failed crypto withdrawal’s transaction details gives the reason to address before another request. An On hold transaction requires manual review by Kraken Support. A withdrawal blocked before submission can have a different cause, such as an amount restriction or an account security lock. Repeating the same request does not change those underlying conditions.
After a password change, withdrawals to new addresses are held for 24 hours. Withdrawals to addresses updated within 24 hours of a password reset are also held; previously saved, unchanged addresses are unaffected. Crypto cancellation depends on whether the transaction has reached the blockchain. Kraken Classic accepts cancellation requests in the Initiated and Pending states; Pending cancellation is not guaranteed. Once Kraken has broadcast the transaction, cancellation is unavailable. A withdrawal identifier alone does not mean that a transfer has reached its recipient.
Kraken Support cannot bypass a timed funding hold, including the seven-day restriction after an ACH Plaid deposit.
Helpful answers about Kraken withdrawals
-
Can Kraken return a cash withdrawal to the card that funded the account?
- Kraken does not support cash withdrawals to credit or debit cards. Funding an account with a card does not create a card withdrawal option. Cash withdrawals require a supported banking method and an eligible bank account whose name matches the verified Kraken account or entity.
-
Which two-factor authentication code authorizes a crypto withdrawal?
- Use the Funding 2FA code when the withdrawal prompts for that protection. Kraken treats sign-in, funding and trading authentication separately, so a working sign-in code may not satisfy the funding prompt. The code must come from the authentication method configured for funding.
-
Why does a new destination show a duplicate withdrawal information error?
- That error can mean the destination description duplicates an existing label. Withdrawal descriptions must be unique across bank accounts, currencies and funding methods, as well as crypto destinations. Give the new entry a distinct description without changing the actual bank details or cryptocurrency address.
-
Does Global Settings Lock block adding a withdrawal bank account?
- Global Settings Lock prevents adding new withdrawal bank accounts and crypto withdrawal addresses. A successful sign-in does not remove that restriction. Requesting removal starts the account’s configured waiting period unless a Master Key set up before the lock provides an immediate override.
-
What should I do when a receiving exchange returns a crypto withdrawal?
- Contact Kraken Support if a returned crypto withdrawal does not appear in your balance. Kraken uses different wallets for deposits and withdrawals, so a return can reach a withdrawal wallet that requires manual recovery. A recipient reporting a return does not itself establish credit to your Kraken account.
-
Will a cash withdrawal automatically convert my crypto holdings into the requested currency?
- A cash withdrawal requires an available balance in the selected cash currency. The portfolio’s displayed total can combine several assets without creating that currency balance. Conversion is a separate trading action; a displayed equivalent value alone cannot fund the cash withdrawal request.
-
Is an email confirmation always required for a new crypto withdrawal address?
- A new address added from a trusted device can receive automatic approval. Otherwise, Kraken may require confirmation through an email sent to the registered address. When that approval link is required, it expires after one hour. Address approval and submission of an actual withdrawal are separate actions.
